Spanish

Spanish lessons begin at the Children’s House with a variety of topics from color to conversation. As students progress, art projects, cooking, & studies of Spanish-speaking countries are incorporated into the curriculum.

The lower level grades focus on conversational Spanish, animals, food, 50 basic commands, weather terms, numbers through 50, items in the classroom, house, markets and cultural exploration.

The 4th & 5th Graders begin verb conjugation, telling time, items in the city/transportation, sports, professions, numbers through 200, conversational Spanish, sentence structure, Hispanic holidays and traditions.

The middle school students learn the conjugational of all regular & irregular verbs, complete sentence structure, full translation, past & present tense verbs, prepositions, comparisons, reading, writing and fluent Spanish.

Art

Our Art class provides a fun, educational experience where the students can be creative and think outside the box.  We focus on a wide variety of techniques and mediums and learn about famous artists and their styles.  Throughout the year, your child will bring home wonderful artwork that you will want to display in your home.

Library

Beginning in Kindergarten, students check out books on a computerized catalog system. Learning research methods, writing stories and making books are among the library activities that challenge the older classes.

Health

Health classes for upper elementary & middle school students teach nutrition, hygiene, body systems & fitness. Students incorporate good habits for lifelong health into an individual plan.

Sports

Intramural sports are sponsored for Kindergarten through Middle School. Older students can participate in conference competition offered in five different sports. Statesville Montessori coordinates a conference of independent and charter schools.

Leadership at Statesville Montessori School

Student council is a student governing body that consists primarily of middle school students elected by the whole student body at Statesville Montessori School.  The student council executive committee officer positions include president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, and sixth grade representative.

The elementary classrooms select a representative from each classroom to report back to the class activities sponsored by the student council and communicate the concerns of their classmates to the executive committee.  The purpose of student council is to provide a public speaking opportunity for students as well as develop leadership skills.  A staff member oversees the student council as a sponsor to provide guidance and direction to the students.

Music

Students experience rhythm, voice instruments, composers and musical notation through our vibrant music program. Special musical productions allow students to share their talents and love of music. Guest artists visit our campus and perform with our students.

Elementary students will continue to learn to read music and to play recorders, xylophones and other small instruments.

Middle School students will learn the ukulele and dulcimer, which they will play for the residents of Kings Grant Retirement Community.

Computer

From the basics to interdisciplinary applications, computer lessons are broad-based. Upper elementary students learn spreadsheet & database applications. Middle school students incorporate yearbook design into their skills.

In addition, most  teachers have students use computers for assignments in core courses. We Keyboarding begins as early as 1st grade and continues through upper elementary.  The internet is used responsibly by all students to enhance math and language skills.

Physical Education

Regular classes in physical education teach students a variety of sports and games, from lacrosse, soccer & basketball, to archery and calisthenics. P.E. is a non-competitive opportunity for learning. “Strong Bodies Build Strong Minds” is a favorite school motto.

Drama

Students stage entertaining productions for school assemblies and family audiences. In addition, students may perform in classroom talent shows, building their confidence in a small group.

Beta Club

The National Junior Beta Club is a national organization that recognizes middle school students who obtain academic excellence.  Statesville Montessori School has a local chapter sponsored by a staff member acting as its representative to the national office in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The criteria to be invited to join this organization is that a middle school student at Statesville Montessori School must achieve an average grade of 93 or above in the core classes offered for two consecutive terms in a school year.  Upon induction into this prestigious organization, a student must maintain this level of academic achievement in order to remain a member. Members are required to perform community service.

Student Life

Students are give the opportunity to participate in a variety of events including, but not limited to a Thanksgiving Play, a Christmas Program, a Shakespeare Play, End of Year Field Trips, Envirothon, Earth Day Celebration, Field Day and Holiday Celebrations.
